Resettlement Basics
Refugees travel long and difficult paths before reaching safety and security in the United States.
In many instances, refugees are forced to flee from their homes, fearing for their lives.
In all cases, resettled refugees have left behind their homelands, family members, friends, and the communities and cultures they know, to begin new lives in the U.S.
The refugee resettlement process involves many different steps and follows different paths depending on the refugee’s country of origin, location of family, and a host of other factors.
HIAS is one of 9 national agencies that make up the U.S. Resettlement Program.
