Scholarship

In 1974, Edwin and Claire Shapiro approached HIAS to establish the Richard Alan Shapiro Scholarship Fund in memory of their son, whose life was cut short in a tragic car accident. Soon after, Norbert Schimmel created a major scholarship fund to honor his son.
What these generous people started grew into a flourishing program of hundreds of scholarships awarded each year* in the U.S. and Israel, provided by people who want to ensure that HIAS refugees can contribute to their adoptive country through opportunities afforded only by advanced education.
To date, nearly 3,000 awards have been given out to immigrant students in both the U.S. and Israel, helping them achieve their goals by providing the opportunity to study everything from engineering to music.
*Please note, the U.S. scholarship program has been paused for one year. Contact HIAS in Spring 2014 for information about the next U.S. scholarship cycle.
